Following the attacks in Paris on last 7, 8 and 9 January 2015, more than 20.000 websites have been victims of cyber attacks from Islamist hackers. Under the banner “Operation France”, hackers presenting themselves as Islamist or jihadists and planned a massive cyber-attack on French websites: government, business, military or other public institutions.
SMEs and public institutions in the viewfinder of cyberdjihadists
Nearly 20,000 websites of hospitals, town halls, councils or universities have been victims of cyber attacks causing service interruptions, data theft, defacement and malware intrusions. The cyber criminal collective, more or less structured, have claimed that was just the beginning. Among them, a group of pro-Palestinian hackers called AnonGhost has launched a database theft campaign in order to make them publicly available. For example, the well-known poker platform frenchnolimit.fr has been hacked.
Gérôme Billois, an European expert in computer security Circle, explained to the AFP that “the affected sites are often structures that do not have the appropriate technical staff to maintain the necessary level of safety”.
Attacks were mainly focused on open source content management systems like Drupal, Joomla!, Magento, and WordPress. The number of different vulnerabilities publicly disclosed for these systems is huge and is a real concern.
Recall of good security practices is not enough
The recall of good security practices by the French IT security agency is not enough. Cyber security is a significant challenge for SMEs and public institutions who lack experienced security staff and often cannot afford many of the tools used by larger companies.
Just as businesses in banking and manufacturing, shopping and entertainment move to pervasive networks, public sector organizations face a challenging new reality when implementing cybersecurity measures.
To help public institutions and eCommerce sites, OZON has created an all-in-one cybersecurity solution to detect vulnerabilities and patch it in a matter of minutes (virtual patching). Concerned about your security, OZON allows you to test the solution for free during 30 days, what are you waiting for?
